János Balázs was born in 1988.  He began his formal music studies at the age of eight at the Járdányi Pál Music School under Erika Hornyánszkyné Becht, and just after a few months of studying, at the age of nine, he won the National Piano Competition in Nyíregyháza.  In 2002, he entered the School for Specially Talented Children at the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest, where he studied under Gyöngyi Keveházi and István Gulyás.


His career began at the age of 16, when he won the First Prize of the International Liszt Competition in Pécs, Hungary. In the following years he won 4 more international music competitions and played in European cities like Budapest (Palace of Arts), Paris (Salle Pleyel), Senlis, Rome, Milano,  London, Berlin, Munich, Stuttgart, Bucharest, Zagreb, Helsinki, Wien (Bösendorfer Saal, Yamaha Saal) Graz, and Cairo (Opera House). He has toured in Japan 4 times (Tokio, Nagoya, Gifu, Yokohama, Sendai), and performs regularly in the US, among others in New York, Washington (DC), Chicago, Los Angeles, Albany (NY) and Aspen. 

He has played together with the Pannon Philharmonic Orchestra, the Symphonic Orchestra of the Hungarian Radio, the Symphonic Orchestra of the town Szeged, the Philharmonic Orchestra of Nagoya, the AACA USA Symphonic Orchestra, the Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra, Zagrab Radio Symphonic Orchestra, to name but a few. He recorded 3 complete Liszt CDs, one in Hungary and the other two in Tokyo and London. In 2010 János played all the piano pieces and concertos written by Chopin in a unique concert tour in Hungary, for which he received an Award from the Polish Government. In the same year he recorded his 4th CD, with Frederic Chopin's pieces.


In August 2011 János won the First Prize in the International Piano Competition in Aspen, USA, then the Third Prize in the greatest piano competition, the Liszt Competition in Hungary, so he became the most rewarded Hungarian pianist. In November 2011 he received the Junior Prima Primissima Prize which is one of the highest-ranking awards in Hungary. Early 2012 he was awarded the KLASSZ Talent Prize in Budapest, Hungary, which involved the release of the 5th CD. Late 2012 he toured in China as a representative of Hungary, and Early 2013 he played in Seoul, Korea.

From the autumn of 2013 János is going to be featured in the Rising Stars programme organised by the European Concert Halls Organisation (ECHO). The six most talented European young artist (i.e. the Rising Stars) of each country are going to perform in the greatest concert halls of Europe.
